An Untitled GW Fic (another one) -----part 1----- "Wufei..." Quatre asked, urgently. "Wufei, can you hear me?" "He was hit pretty hard, Quatre." Heero pointed out. "I heard the doctors talking. They don't have much hope for him. "Its not supposed to happen this way." Quatre said, between choked sobs. "Not to us. We're supposed to go out in one of those blazes of glory that all the songs sing about. Not this way." He looked around, then he noticed. "Oh my god." he said, his voice, eyes, every part of his features sang out in alarm. Heero realized why almost instantly. Duo was gone. "Stay here, in case Wufei wakes up." Heero told Quatre. "I'll look for Duo." Quatre sat beside the bed, holding Wufei's hand. "Please, wake up." he whispered. "I don't want to lose you. We don't want to lose you." ***** Heero was looking all over the hospital for Duo when the announcement came over the hospital speakers. It was one most patients wouldn't have realized as urgent. But Heero knew what the code meant. With his heart pounding in his throat, he raced to the roof as fast as his legs could take him. "DUO! STOP!" he shouted as he ran onto the roof. Duo didn't turn to face him or step down. But he did reply. "I have to." He said, "I have to do this so you'll stay alive. Everyone around me dies. Everyone I touch, everyone I love. All of them die!" "That happens to everyone, Duo." Heero told him. "You don't get it, Heero." Duo wept. "Its my fault that Wufei was hit by that car. He dove in front of it to push me out of the way." "If that's true," Heero pointed out, "then that's all the more reason for you to come down from the ledge. Duo, Wufei risked his life so you could keep yours. You should honor that gift, not throw it away." Heero's words touched Duo's heart. The braided pilot stepped down from the ledge, then rushed over and fell into a sobbing heap in Heero's arms. -----part 2----- Heero led his distraught friend away from the ledge and back to Wufei's room. Duo rushed to Wufei's side and slumped over him, all his strength gone. He sobbed inconsolably as he held the unconscious pilot in his arms. "Please don't leave me, Wu-chan." he whispered. "Please. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. Kami-sama, how can you do this to him? Maybe I deserve your hatred, but Wu-chan is innocent. Please don't take him away just to hurt me. Torture me, if you want. But not this way. Please?" "Duo..." Heero began. Trowa shook his head. "I think we should let them be alone for a while." "But Duo almost..." "We'll just step out of hearing range." Trowa explained. Heero nodded in agreement and the two boys went to the other side of the room. Duo continued to sob with his head now resting on Wufei's chest, muttering "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." over and over. Wufei opened his eyes, slowly. He looked, quietly, around the room, then down at the sobbing Duo. "Shhhh..." he said, stroking Duo's hair and playing, thoughtfully, with Duo's braid. "Hush now, Duo. It's all right." Duo blinked, then looked up. His eyes were still wet with tears, but there was now a look of joy and relief on his face. "Wufei!" he exclaimed. The others had noticed that Wufei was awake by this time and ran to his bedside. "You had us worried." Quatre told him. ***** "Heero told me what almost happened." Wufei told Duo while the others went to get snacks. "I'm glad he talked you out of it." "It was bullshit, Wufei." Duo told him. "About you trying to jump?" Wufei raised an eyebrow. "Why would Heero lie about..." "No," Duo cut him off. "I meant what I told him my reason was. That was bullshit." "So it wasn't about saving us from your supposed curse." "I am cursed." Duo said, pointedly. "Everyone I meet dies." "Duo," Wufei sighed. "people die every day. Your meeting them has nothing to do with it." "But if they didn't meet me, they'd do it a lot later." Duo argued. Wufei noticed that Duo was leading him away from the original topic. "Forget it." he said. "I'm not letting go that easily. Now, what was your real reason?" "I was scared." Duo confessed. "I was afraid that you would die. I was afraid of living without you." -----TBC-----
