The Worst Day of Their Lives -----part 1----- "Come on, lazy baka. Get out of bed. It's your turn on patrol." Heero shook Duo, but Duo did not respond. "Hey! Get up!" he tried again. Duo didn't budge. Heero pulled the covers back and saw the sheets were soaked with blood. "Duo!" Heero cried out, "Dear Kami-sama, Duo! What have you done?!" He lifted Duo's limp, lifeless body into his arms and noticed the gash in Duo's wrist. "Why, Duo-kun? Why? Wufei walked in to tell Duo that breakfast was ready. His cheerful mood vanished when he took in the scene before him. "Heero..." he said, trying to find the right words to say, and finding instead that they didn't exist. "He must've done it last night." Heero said. "He was already..." he couldn't say the word. Not about Duo. "... when I found him." "I'll tell the others." Wufei offered. He felt the least he could do would be to take some of the burden off of Heero's shoulders. He put an arm around Heero. "Heero," he said, gently, "I'm so sorry." Heero swallowed back his tears. He would not cry. He would be strong for Duo. Duo, whom he loved. Whom he needed more than any man. Who was now gone. -----part 2----- Heero sat despondently at the breakfast table. He and the others had habitually served themselves, but not one of them could bring himself to actually eat. It seemed callous under the circumstances "We should talk about it." Wufei suggested. "What's to talk about?" Heero snapped, angrily. "He swore he'd never leave us and he broke his promise. He left us." "Yes, Heero." Wufei nodded. "He did leave us. In the worst way possible." "But why?" Trowa asked. "Why would he take his own life that way?" Heero stood up and left the room. "Someone should keep an eye on him." Trowa told Wufei. "I think Duo's death has really gotten to him, even if he is trying to hide it." Wufei got the hint and went after Heero. "I think he blames himself for Duo's suicide." Trowa told Quatre. "We have to keep watch. I don't want to lose Heero, too." Quatre nodded. Heero looked around Duo's room until he found the letter crumpled up in the waste basket. He started to read it, then sank onto the bed. "It was my fault." he grieved. "All my fault." "Let me see that." Wufei said. He took the letter and read it carefully. "Dear Heero" (crossed out) "Hee-chan" (crossed out) Heero (crossed out.) To the Perfect Soldier (crossed out) To my beloved Heero. Please forgive me for what I am about to do. I don't know if you love me. In a way, I hope you don't, because if you do, this will have been a huge mistake... I wish you could've said it just once before I departed from this world..." Wufei stopped reading. "I never told him I loved him." Heero explained. "I made love to him. I held him. I thought it was enough. I thought he knew." "Some of us need to hear the words, Heero." Wufei explained, gently. -----part 3----- Heero kicked the doorframe. He could've sworn it said 'ouch' when he did. And it sounded like Duo. Duo, his lover. Whom he had killed with his inability to say three little words. "Duo. Oh, God, Duo. Duo!" he wailed it out the last time, then finally broke down into tears, the Perfect Soldier giving way to the heartbroken youth who could no longer be hidden. "Heero?" Heero wept into the pillow. "Duo, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." he sobbed. "It's okay, really. I mean, you were sleeping when you kicked me, Heero. It's not like you could help it, you know." Heero blinked and opened his eyes. Duo was sitting up in bed, rubbing his leg, which sported a rather nasty bruise. "That must've been some nightmare." he said. Heero blinked again. Was he dreaming this?! Was Duo really alive. "Duo?!" he sounded astonished. Duo's face took on a look of concern. "Heero, are you all right?" Heero nodded. "Yes." he said. Tears began to fall down his cheeks, but he didn't try to check them. It had been a dream... but not only a dream. It had been a warning to him, and he intended to heed it. "Oh, Duo. It was horrible. I dreamed you killed yourself." "Gee," Duo said, trying to cheer Heero up, "what I won't do to get out of washing the dishes." "Baka." Heero was laughing and crying at the same time now. "You did it because I never told you how I felt. Because I never said..." Heero paused, then leaned over and kissed Duo, soflty, on his lips. "I love you, Duo." Duo felt a teardrop trickle down his cheek as Heero drew him close. "I've waited forever for you to tell me that." he said. "It was worth the wait." "I should've told you sooner." Heero told him. "Shut up and kiss me." Duo challenged. "The irony." Heero raised an eyebrow. "What?" Duo asked. "You telling someone to shut up." Heero grinned. Duo picked up a pillow and thwrapped Heero with it. Heero picked up a pillow and returned the favor. The pillow-fight went on until Heero had Duo pinned beneath him. Then, Heero moved closer to Duo and kissed him, running his fingers through Duo's unbound hair and undressing Duo as Duo positioned himself to be penetrated. "Are you two going to spend all day in bed?" Quatre asked from the doorway. "Yes!" they both replied. "Figures." Quatre muttered, as he closed the door and walked off. -----Owari-----
