Age: Fifteen Height: 168cm Blood Type: A Birthplace: Tenryo, San'un Province, Kutouku Family: Parents died in the war; has a twin brother, Suboshi Hobby: Composing Powers: Can control at will the life energy emitted from the mouth by playing a tune on a flute. (The above was taken from the "Seiryuu Counterattack!" CD booklet.) Amiboshi was born August 26, like his brother Suboshi. His real name is Bu Koutoku. He was fifteen years of age when he joined the Seiryuu Shichiseishi. There is a character on his right shoulder that means "free spirit." While he and Suboshi were still very young, their parents were killed during a war, causing Amiboshi to acquire an aversion to physical violence, for he recognized the toll it took on human beings. He is the quieter, more reserved Seiryuu Twin, preferring to use non-physical modes of combat to defeat an enemy. He is able to concentrate his Chi and send it through his flute. Depending on the notes he plays, he can cause people to convulse and their heads to explode, or he can ease them into slumber. He does not, however, take pleasure from such activities, unlike his more extroverted and aggressive brother. Amiboshi is far more disciplined and sensitive than Suboshi, but he loves his brother dearly and would do anything for him. As the elder of the two twins, he took on much of the responsibility while they grew up as orphans and therefore is less hotheaded than his brother. While identical in appearance, the two are polar opposites in personality. Amiboshi is without question the more humane one, though there are times with he can attack with the ferocity and destructiveness of his twin. He was sent to infiltrate the Suzaku Seishi and pose as Chiriko, thusly gaining their trust and then intervening with their attempts to call upon Suzaku. The real Chiriko showed up as Amiboshi was preparing to kill the Suzaku Seishi and stopped his flute-playing by breaking in with a separate melody, causing the tune to lose its power. Amiboshi attempted to escape the Suzaku Seishi but Tamahome and Tasuki chased him to a bridge in an attempt to kill him. Miaka stopped them even though Amiboshi was still trying to murder her as a part of his duty as a Seiryuu Shichiseishi. During the process a piece of the bridge crumbled out from beneath his feet. He started to fall but Miaka caught his flute while he was still hanging on, and then smiled at him. He smiled back... and then let go of the flute in order to commit suicide. Amiboshi later reappeared as Kaika. His body had washed ashore and an elderly couple had found him. They renamed him Kaika after their dead son, believing that the river had given them a second chance to read their deceased child. Suffering from amnesia, he had no memory of the events that had transpired and did not know that he was a Seiryuu Shichiseishi... or at least, this was what he claimed for some time. While scouting for a weasal that had been plaguing the village where he resided, he found the bedraggled Miaka, who fell unconscious into his arms. Kaika took her back to his home where she rested she several days before she awakened. His adoptive parents asked Miaka to marry Kaika (much to his apparent humiliation) but Miaka remembered how Amiboshi had ruined the ceremony of Suzaku and though a kind person at heart, Miaka still held a slight grudge. Furthermore, her love for Tamahome was so intense that even the idea of leaving behind her troubles was less tempting than the thought of seeing her beloved again. Kaika implored with Miaka to forget her past and live a peaceful life, but she refused, and he accepted this refusal with grace. It was then that he admitted he knew he was really Amiboshi, but had wanted to abandon his past in favor of a brighter future. The village was attacked when Miaka was located by Nakago. Soldiers laid waste to the property and inhabitants and were about to kill Miaka when Amiboshi once more brought forth his flute and used it as a lethal weapon. He played a tune and whispered the word, "Tear." The soldiers were ripped apart by the overwhelming force of his Chi. Amiboshi then told Miaka he would find Tamahome for her, and she agreed to stay behind. 'Course, Miaka's a habitual liar... Amiboshi tried to save Tamahome from the illusionist Tomo, who was attacking him, but Tomo was too powerful for Amiboshi to stop him. Miaka -- who just couldn't sit still for once in her life -- and Tamahome were assaulted by Tomo's illusions, as was Amiboshi. Amiboshi managed to break free of the illusion by distracting himself, leaving him able to fight Tomo again. Tomo released Miaka and attacked Amiboshi with fervor. He was prepared to deal the final blow when Suboshi arrived and killed Tomo on the spot. Cradling his wounded brother, Suboshi placed some forgetfulness medicine (*urk* can't remember what it's called) on his lips and kissed his brother, allowing it to seep into the unwilling Amiboshi's mouth and erase his memories. He stated sadly that Amiboshi was not meant for the violent lifestyle of a Seishi. Amiboshi passed out. Suboshi later took him back to his village and placed him before the home of Amiboshi's adoptive parents where Amiboshi would be allowed to live his life as Kaika, never knowing about his dark and painful past. Incidentally, Amiboshi tends to be more popular than Suboshi due to his overall kinder personality. There's been much confusion over at least one Amiboshi-related issue, so I thought that I might cover it here since it perturbs me to no end. Many people believe that he was in love with Miaka and that is why he asked her to spend her life with him. Watase Yuu-sensei herself stated that he did not love her, and I agree completely with that. Why? Amiboshi admitted that he sought the perfect life. He had a complete family, a chance at living like a regular person, and all the potential in the world. But he was missing one thing, and that was a love. Miaka was convenient for him. He could finish piecing together his ideal life if he had a wife - or fiancee - to be by his side. His easy acceptance of Miaka's refusal provides more backing for this. He never loved her, but he thought he could if given the chance. Amiboshi was a dreamer in the purest sense. His dream was to be utterly, unsettlingly typical. Miaka would have been the icing on the cake, but she didn't want to be. Her saying "no" was what finally brought Amiboshi back into reality. He saw that the perfect life can't exist the way he wanted it to be. He was fooling himself, and the moment Miaka said she would not become a part of his fantasy was when he was shaken enough to realize how blind he was being. So then, why was he so set on defending her? Because he wanted someone else to have that life he'd been seeking. If he could see someone else achieve that existence, he'd be pleased. Miaka and Tamahome joining together for a lifetime would indirectly fulfill Amiboshi's wishes and aspirations. Amiboshi's feelings toward Miaka, as he expressed them initially, were selfish, one-sided fancies. Thankfully, Miaka recognized that Amiboshi was trying to ease the two of them into a quasi-reality where everything was peachy-happy-good. When confronted with someone else who felt that way, Amiboshi finally knew he had to give up on his personal Twilight Zone. Return to the Main Site
