Ash was standing in the Saffron City Gym with a victorious smile. He had just 
won a match against Sabrina, the Saffron gym leader. Brock, Misty, Pikachu, and 
Togepi smiled as well. "Congratulations, Ash!" they said. Pikachu looked very 
ecstatic. "Pika!" he said. "Brrriiii!" Togepi trilled.  "Thank you." Ash had 
decided to come back to Saffron after recieving a letter from Sabrina, and this 
time had battled her Alakazam using a Venonat he had caught. Sabrina came up 
behind him and put her hand on his shoulder. "Good job. You figured out that 
psychics are also weak against bugs, and used that knowledge," she said. "I 
also figured out that a Venonat is a lot easier to catch than any ghost," Ash 
said, laughing. Sabrina laughed. "Right you are." Brock and Misty were standing 
in the doorway. "Hey Ash, are you coming?" Brock asked. "Mind if I just stay 
and chat with Sabrina for awhile?" Ash asked. Sabrina was shocked-it was like 
he had read her thoughts. "All right. Just don't be there too long." Misty 
said. Then Brock, Misty, and Togepi left. 
        "So how have you been?" Sabrina asked. "Pretty good. You?" Ash asked. "I'm 
fine. How are your pokémon? Any of them evolve?" "Charmander evolved, but the 
excitement wore off. Charmeleon stopped listening to me, and I don't think 
Charizard's going to be any different," the young trainer said. Sabrina looked 
at him. "So you're saying that he was loyal as a Charmander, then he stopped 
listening after he evolved?" she asked. Ash nodded. "His old trainer was very 
abusive-he even abandoned Charmander," he explained. "Oh..that's too bad," said 
Sabrina gently. "No wonder it won't obey. It's too scared that it may be 
abandoned again if it obeys you. It's being disobedient because it's frightened 
of being left again!" Ash's eyes snapped open and he said, "You mean-it's 
disobedient because it's scared I'll abandon it? I never knew that...you are 
one amazing girl." Sabrina looked into his eyes. There was no mistaking the 
look of desire there....No, she thought, looking away. He's only 10. It would 
be wrong. Ash smiled. "I guess you're right. I guess Charizard just needs to 
know I won't abandon him-ever. Then maybe he'll start listening to me," he
